How I Decorated My First Home With Zero Clue and a Pinterest Board

The day I got the keys to my first home, I stepped inside, looked around at the bare walls and echoing rooms and thought, “Congratulations to me, but… now what?” Honestly, I had no idea what the next step would be to make this blank property my own beautiful home.

I hadn’t done any interior design courses. I didn’t have expert advice on hand. It was just me, excited, a little nervous and holding onto a Pinterest board full of pretty ideas I had pinned but didn’t quite understand.

So, here’s how I slowly turned an average space into my first beautiful home.

Starting With a Feeling, Not a Theme

My friends, family, neighbours and everyone their love asking, “What theme are you going for?” Coastal, Boho, Scandi, and Industrial. The list goes on. I smiled and nodded like I had it all figured out, but the truth was, I didn’t want to be boxed into one look.

What I did know was how I wanted the space to feel. Calm, soothing to the eyes and easy to live in. I didn’t want to design a trophy house that I would show off to everyone. I wanted a safe corner of the world that felt like a breath of fresh air.

So, instead of chasing a theme, I began choosing colours and textures that gave me that feeling. Soft whites, warm browns and pastels were the shades that were running in my mind.

One Idea at a Time

Every morning and evening, I sat with my perfectly brewed coffee, scrolling Pinterest like a mood diary. I pinned everything I was drawn to without overthinking it. Weeks later, I looked at the board and saw patterns. It showed neutrals, natural light, plants, soft lines and lots of quiet spaces. That’s how I found my style. Not by naming it, but by noticing what made me feel at peace. There is something really special about designing a home that reflects who you are rather than who you are trying to impress. It’s more like learning to trust your own voice in a world full of noise.

Styling My Walls and Floors

I didn’t rush to choose materials for my floors and walls. Not because I didn’t care, but because I wanted to wait for the right pieces instead of just filling the space. After days of research, I finally decided to choose grey Travertine for my patio. For my living room’s feature wall, I chose to create it with beige Limestone in a stacked stone style and kept the rest of the walls painted in a creamy shade.

It’s worth mentioning that Stone Centre’s Outdoor Travertine Paverswere spot on for my design needs and their team made the whole process super easy. Plus, they even provided free samples so I could be sure before making a decision.

Small Budget, Big Ideas

With a tight budget, I had to get creative. So, I hunted for pre-used furniture online, painted old chairs, repurposed crates as side tables and used baskets for both storage and decoration. I even visited local thrift shops for quirky lamps and rugs that added character without costing a fortune. When I found a cracked wooden door, I turned it into a headboard. Little hacks like these not only saved money but also made my space feel uniquely mine.

My Secret Favourite Spot

If I had to choose one space I quietly adore, it’s the entryway. It’s nothing grand, but it’s the first thing I see when I walk in. I placed a simple wooden bench with storage, placed a second-hand vintage mirror above it and added warm lighting that makes evenings feel soothing. This space is my moment of pause between the world outside and the life I have built inside.

Outdoors That Brought Me Closer to Nature

My little backyard was not much at first. But I had a picture in my mind. Warm evenings under string lights, a book in hand, the smell of jasmine in the air. So, I gave this backyard a little makeover.

A friend of mine suggested choosing Sandstone as Outdoor Stone Pavers for my project by Stone Depot (must say their range was epic).  The creamy beige shade that I chose made the yard feel brighter and more open. And, with a foldable wooden table, a few potted plants and some fairy lights, that little land became my perfect evening spot.

A Few Quick Thoughts from Someone Who Knew Nothing

  • Don’t try to make it perfect. Just make it feel right.
  • Start with what you already have, then build from there.
  • Mix and match old things with new ones.
  • Most importantly, trust your instincts.

At the End

I still move things around and have blank walls. And yes, I still scroll through Pinterest for ideas that may or may not work. But my home feels like me now. And maybe that’s the real goal. Because in the end, a home isn’t where everything looks glorious; it’s where everything begins.
